Food safety manager certification in Detroit
Detroit's food scene runs from Corktown and Eastern Market to the coney islands, banquet halls, and neighborhood carryouts that have fed the city for generations. All of it answers to the Detroit Health Department, which runs its own licensing and inspection program separate from Wayne County.

What Michigan requires
Michigan's Food Law (Act 92 of 2000, MCL 289.2129) requires food service establishments to employ at least one managerial employee as a food safety manager, certified under a personnel certification program accredited by the American National Standards Institute using Conference for Food Protection standards. The ServSafe® Food Protection Manager Certification meets that standard and is accepted by Michigan health departments.
The exemption is narrow: low-risk establishments serving only pre-packaged or non-potentially-hazardous food, and licensed temporary establishments. If you run a kitchen in Detroit, you need a certified manager.

- The manager class and the proctored exam run in a single day — you leave having sat the exam. The ServSafe® Food Protection Manager certification is valid for five years. Food handler training is much shorter and can be run for a whole crew in one visit.
- Can you come to our Detroit location instead?
- Yes — that's most of what we do. We bring the instructor, the exam materials, and the testing equipment to your establishment and schedule around service: early mornings, between shifts, or after close. There's no travel fee anywhere in metro Detroit.
